In the history of painting, the naked female body has traditionally been depicted as a passive object of desire for the male gaze and an idealized form of beauty. In Wallop, the female subject steps out of the ‘canvas’ becomes an active creator, and strikes back at the surface she has been frozen on for centuries. Her defiant movements inscribe the female body into the metallic surface as if to carve out a space in which women can exist on their own terms. The body at display appears both elegant and aggressive, vulnerable and powerful, fierce and gentle — qualities that are not contradicting but coexisting
