The series ‘Beyond Domination’ marks a new branch of paintings in Miriam Kongstad’s practice, by bringing her background as a choreographer and dancer directly to the surface of the artwork. In a highly choreographic manner, large-scale and handmade aluminium constructions are manipulated with crowbars, metal brushes, drills, paint, and chemicals. By punching, smashing, scratching, throwing, and caressing each piece with her naked body, the artist plays with traditions of gestural abstraction, uniting expressions of aggression, power, softness, elegance, eroticism, and releases of energy from a feminine perspective.
